"Building Your Wardrobe"

Ok I know most of us have a closet full of clothes that either 1) is overflowing and hard to manage 2) have clothes that have not been worn for over a year 3) are the same item different color. Well here is your time to get up and get rid of all that extra junk. Having tons of clothes is great because you might never what to wear the same thing twice, but in reality we all have our essential items we wear at least one or twice a week or we  pack when we go on trips.

So let’s make space for these items that in the end will be our "go to" item. All the items that are to follow are essential to any woman's closet. They allow for so many versatile looks, and I will tell you right here at Casuna's Connection, how to take 6 essential items and make them into 20 different looks, but honestly you can use these items and probably make 100s. Ok that’s a little exaggerated but you know what I mean.

Let’s get your “key pieces” together. Like Lauren Conrad said in her book “Style”, “key pieces are the foundation around which you’ll build your wardrobe”. My key pieces are the items that I cannot see myself without when I travel from home. I love to have that show stopper piece, but I also have to have my comfortable, flattering, and timeless pieces. So I went through my closet, drawers, and bins and picked my 6 favorite, must have things, and let me just say I was amazed at how many outfits I was able to create by just adding an item here or there. Just remember it takes time to create a perfect wardrobe, and no one’s is perfect because style is always evolving. So let’s peek into my closet…

Key Pieces

Little Black Dress

Thank you Coco Channel for the little black dress. The little black dress has been around for almost a century, but oh how it has evolved. I just bought this from American Apparel. I have about 4 black dresses and they are all so different, but I love this one because it has no lines and a clean cut with a nice silhouette, but warning it is a tight dress that will show off every inch of the body so you either need to go commando or you can wear some thin boyshorts.  Try wearing a fitted blazer, cardigan, pumps, flats, ankle booties, long necklace, fedora, wide or thin belt. The list could go on and on so have fun with it.

Jeans

The American Staple! On May 20, 1873 Blue Jeans were born. The story is quite interesting but also the many options you could wear with them are as well. Jeans come in all colors, styles, and flares. I personally like my charlotte Russe skinny jeans that are pictured. I do in fact wear mine with pumps or boots, either knee or ankle, but you can also wear with flats,  flip flops, or wedges. Black and deep blue’s are super flattering to the body then light or white washes. Also they look a lot fancier especially with a button down shirt or a shirt with some embellishments.

Collared Button-Down

This item is a must have by far because you can wear it with your jeans or even with a skirt or leggings. If you add a blazer or a fedora or even just some nice necklaces you can have 5 different outfits. The white button down can be paired with a belt as well to add more shape to your body. The white button down is also referred to as the “morning after shirt" especially if it’s a little bigger, cause occasionally men wear white button down shirts, so you can imagine why its called that. I sometimes wear mine around the house when I have my boyshorts on because it is very sexy. When the weather gets warmer, that’s if you live in New England area since its freezing, wear a bikini under it while it’s unbuttoned and you have a cute cover up. Then if you need to go somewhere throw on jeans. Mine is from Macy's but honestly go into your husband's, boyfriends, guy friend's closet and borrow theirs.

Black Pumps

If you know me, you know I LOVE shoes and I have a real obsession. My black pumps are one of my must have because I can wear them with everything and anything. I am 5'8" and love 4 plus inch heels, because my legs are really long and they just make them go on and on. If you wear a neutral color shoe as well that will also make your legs look even longer especially if they are a high heel. I love my pair from Charlotte Russe not only for the price but also for the comfort. These almond toe shoes have a hidden platform which makes it easier for you to walk and you can wear them all night. I have this style in 7 different colors. They are in green, snake, purple, brown, white, gray, and black. Also if your shoes ever get messed up by scuffs...I have some fun ways to fix them...but be on the watch for that part of the style section in my blog.

White and Black T-Shirt

You can wear your white or black T shirt with ANYTHING. You can spice it up with a skirt and necklaces. You can wear it with your jeans or leggings. White or black shirts look great with blazers. Remember with a simple shirt you can make the rest of your outfit more colorful or even more extravagant. This is like the glue to an outfit so have fun with the rest.

Blazer

A blazer is key to a lot of these looks. I have about 7 and each is a different color and also a different style, but I have my "go to" black one that I pair with pretty much anything in my closet. I love mine that I bought it at Target. It has a great cut and a great stretch. I don't recommend wearing your man's because men's blazers are cut for men's body but women blazers are meant for curves. You can buy blazers anywhere now and honestly Thrift stores have the best styles and colors and a vintage blazer makes the outfit even better especially if you pair it with a classic traditional top or bottom.

These are just my top 6 "go to" items. I also think a woman should have a good bra and underwear especially for jeans and dresses. Also a pair of boots, either high heel, or ridding boot is important. Maxi dresses as well are just fun and easy going. Sweaters are also a clutch item because they keep you warm and looking so cute.
